Neumann KH120 monitors
They say 'Neumann', but they're really Klein and Hummel. (that's the KH in the name). But wait. Neumann is actually Sennheiser. Gefell is actually Neuman. Oy vey, this is getting confusing.
Monitors are really the most personal, variable piece of gear in a studio. It's not about how they sound; it's about what they make you do. The best monitors are the ones you do the best mixes on. I hate recommending monitors to people, because it really is so personal. For a long time, monitoring was perhaps the most volatile piece in my chain, as I shuffled between many types of monitors over the years. But I got these about 6 years ago, and I will say that I am pretty settled with these. For now. Heh. On my ears, with my gear, in my room, the KH120s translate better than anything I have ever used. I dial in a mix, take it somewhere else, bang, there it is. Plus, those reverb tails. Right to the floor. These are powered, which I generally prefer to save me one more piece of gear to wire up (plus, the amp SHOULD be, usually, perfectly matched to the drivers). The signal goes from the converters into a Manicon passive volume control, right into the KH120s.
